Higher dilution is required for essential oil application to young children as their body system is yet fully developed. Never use an undiluted essential oil on a child (except Lavender or Tea tree on minor burns, cuts, or bruises).
In most cases, Lemongrass is the first thing that goes to the parents’ minds for treating insect bites. However, the essential oil of Lemongrass is not suitable for children under 2 because it has a very high content of citral ( 85%.) which may increase intraocular pressure (the fluid pressure inside the eye) for the risk of glaucoma.
Citral also contains skin-irritating properties which have a higher potential for skin sensitization for younger children with thinner skin, they may absorb beyond the safety level.
Be careful of using the essential oils of Lemongrass, Melissa, and May Chang as they all contain high levels of citral. (Lemongrass (Cymbopogon flexousus); Melissa (Melissa officinalis); May Chang (Litsea cubeba)
Do not adopt the methods of inhalation and oral dosing for children.
